Weir LGE Process

Weir Materials and Foundries is a leading supplier of quality steel castings to companies involved in the manufacture of pumps, valves, compressors, turbines, filtration and flow measurement equipment and general engineering components. These companies supply equipment for major projects throughout the world in industries including oil and gas, paper, rubber, chemical and power generation.

A wide range of castings in carbon, stainless and duplex steels weighing from a few kilogrammes up to eight tonnes are produced to standards from "commercial" right up to those demanding exacting radiographic examination.

Excellent machining facilities are available and castings can be supplied either proof machined or finish machined depending on requirements.

Pattern Shop

Highly skilled pattern-makers are fully experienced in pattern construction in either wood, metal or resin.

Methods

Customer liaison and a technical advisory service at the design or enquiry stages are important factors in ensuring that the purchaser's specific needs are met.

The methods department uses the latest solidification simulation software including "Solstar" and "Magmasoft"

Attention to detail and careful monitoring of initial sampling stages ensure the production of quality castings.

Laboratory

Routine spectrographic, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen analyses are carried out to ensure exact material specifications are available prior to casting.

Mechanical testing is also carried out on site.

Coremaking

Sand - Complex cores using resin bonded and zircon corovit sands are produced by a highly skilled team.

Ceramic - Where a fine surface finish, narrow apertures or tight dimensional tolerances are required, ceramic cores can be offered. These are particularly suitable for hydraulic passageways.

Floor Moulding

Traditional moulding methods and individual skills ensure that customers' specific needs are catered for.

Flow Line Moulding

Accuracy and repeatability on the automatic moulding line ensures dimensional consistency.

An important feature of the system is that it can cope with single castings, batch quantities or production runs.

Heat Treatment

Modern facilities offer a full range of heat treatment including:

  • Sress Relieving.
  • Normalising.
  • Quenching.
  • Annealing.

Melting Capabilities

A battery of six induction melting furnaces provides a maximum melting capacity of approximately 14 tonnes as liquid metal, which gives a finished casting capacity up to eight tonnes.

Dressing, Shotblasting, Pickling

A wealth of experience and expertise in the finishing section of the foundry completes the comprehensive facilities available to our customers.

NDE

Comprehensive non-destructive testing examination facilities include:
  • Dye penetrant.
  • Magnetic particle.
  • Ultrasonic.
  • Radiography.
